A Portland State University student has been accused of fatally shooting another student near the downtown Portland campus early Monday morning.
The suspect, 20-year-old Keenan Harpole, surrendered to authorities in Bend later that day. The university confirmed that Harpole is a student and a former PSU football player, who previously played for Bend’s Mountain View High School.
Portland police reported that Harpole turned himself in to Deschutes County authorities and was subsequently transported back to Portland.
He was booked into the Multnomah County jail on Monday night and faces charges of second-degree murder and unlawful use of a weapon, both related to domestic violence, according to court records.
Harpole pleaded not guilty during a Tuesday afternoon arraignment and is scheduled to return to court for another hearing next week.
Portland police identified the shooting victim as 19-year-old Amara Marluke, also a PSU student.
